A Three In One Quilt Pattern Block
I’m on a journey to create random quilt blocks and block number 2 is A Three in One Quilt Pattern block (Brackman ID 1073) originally published by the Kansas City Star in 1948! Keep reading for the free cutting instructions.
This block was selected using Google’s random number generator (RNG) to select the block.
Do you prefer EPP? If yes – I am selling a pattern to make this EPP style in a 10-inch block, that includes PDF, SVG, and DXF: 10″ “Three In One” Templates for English Paper Piecing (EPP) | PDF | SVG | DXF – Tasha Quilts
Book & Software
The book I’m using is the Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns which you can find on Amazon here*.
The software is BlockBase+ which you can buy here*. It is compatible with Electric Quilt 8 (EQ8) which you can find here*.
*The links above are affiliate links, but I only recommend things I would recommend to a friend! I love flipping through the book and as someone who likes to use technology to create patterns and templates, I am loving the BlockBase+ software!
Cutting Instructions – 15 Inch Block
You will need 3 colors of fabric for this design. This is both traditionally pieced and foundation paper pieced:

Fabric 1 – Brown
- (4) – 3.5″ x 2″
- (2) – 4″ x 4″ (for HST)
Fabric 2 – Pink
- (5) – 3.5″ x 3.5″ (center 9 patch)
Fabric 3 – White
- (4) – 3.5″ x 3.5″ (center 9 patch)
- (4) – 3.5″ x 2″
- (2) – 4″ x 4″ (for HST)
Foundation Paper Piecing Instructions
- Print two of the template sheets found here at actual size. Note, when using this template, you will have to mirror the order of the colors like you do any other FPP pattern.
Assembly Instructions
- Starting with the FPP – assemble two units with fabric 2 as the square and two units with fabric 3 as the square. I recommend writing on your templates what color each section is. When looking at the template, you need to mirror what color you want where. So, for example, if you’re looking at the template and you want the white triangle on the left, you actually need to label the triangle on the right as white so when you flip it over it is on the correct side.
- Using the 4″ Squares, create your HST using the 2-at-a-time method. Trim to 3.5″.
- Now you have all the individual components ready to assemble. Use the chart below to assembly your rows and then your block or check out the YouTube video!
