Cypress Quilt Block (Free Pattern for Beginners)

If you’re looking for a modern quilt block pattern that’s beginner-friendly but still looks impressive, the Cypress quilt block is exactly that. It combines two foundational techniques—half-square triangles and flying geese—to create a bold, directional design that feels dynamic and modern without being complicated.

You can download the full pattern and start right away.

Where This Block Came From and Where to Find More Like It

This block was inspired by designs found in reference books like the Encyclopedia of Quilt Blocks. If you find yourself finishing a block and then immediately wondering what to make next, a resource like this is actually useful. It gives you a large library of quilt block ideas without having to rely on random searching or scrolling.

It’s not a step-by-step project book, which is exactly why it works. It’s a reference you can return to whenever you want new ideas or want to explore different block designs. I use this in conjunction with BlockBase+ software with EQ8.

EQ8 BlockBase+

BlockBase+ is one of my favorite places to get quilty inspiration. I can look through thousands of quilt blocks for inspiration and use in Adobe Illustrator.

Tips for Better Results

If you want your quilt block to look clean and precise, focus on accuracy more than speed. Trimming matters more than most people think, and slightly off units will compound as you assemble the block. Take the time to trim your half-square triangles and flying geese correctly.

A consistent ¼-inch seam allowance is critical. If that’s off, your entire block size will be off.

Before you sew anything together, lay out the full block and double-check the direction of your flying geese. They should point away from the center square.

Full Quilt Mock-Up

Once you’ve made one Cypress quilt block, you can repeat it to create a full quilt, which creates amazing secondary patterns. Your fabric choices could make a large impact on what kinds of designs are prominent!

If you prefer to learn visually, you can follow along with the full walkthrough on YouTube where the block is made step-by-step. This is especially helpful if you’re still getting comfortable with flying geese or half-square triangles.
